I don’t care how “sporty” it might be.
Sports cars are inherently impractical, much like a football (or futbol) is.

Words have no real meaning in automotive journalism.

Clearly. And in automotive marketing, neither.

Don’t care, RWD manual Diesel with cloth seats (euro only, suckeeeers)

Soon, it won’t matter. After the crossovers and SUV wannabees take over, fast boxes with lux badges and $40k premiums will be the only ‘sports cars’ left to buy.

Liftback? SPORTBACK!
Impractically cramped sedan? GRAND COUPE
SUV? SAV!

Hi

The headline is just using Jaguar’s marketing speak. I wish that Angus (or whoever actually penned the headline) would push back on that and call them on how ridiculous it is. I guess that ship has long since sailed though, ever since Nissan starting the Maxima the 4DSC back in the late ‘80s...

Maybe from the big makers, but there will always be small outfits that will cater to enthusiasts, thankfully. As I see it, the real change will come in a few decades when autonomy is reliable and widely available. Plenty of people buy sports cars for the image and nothing else; it will be interesting to see how much of a market is left for small, fun-to-drive cars after there’s an option to no longer drive yourself. Hopefully there are enough of us knuckleheads out there...

Yeah, mentioned it in another response. Maybe the marketers have been at this long enough that the journalists just don’t have the energy to fight back anymore.

Many print outfits are struggling to survive, but I don’t buy into the idea that they (MT, C&D, R&T, Automobile, etc.) sway their opinions based on who’s buying ad space (although that’s a very common sentiment in the letters to the editor whenever a comparison test doesn’t go a certain way!). Seems like there’s some integrity left at the top tier outfits.

I'm not even remotely interested in SUVs in anyway, but I'd definitely be open to cross-shopping an F-Pace with an XE.

They should just call them big & tall hatchbacks.

Not if they want Americans to actually buy them.
They need to call them SportCrossActionUtilityCoupes.
